ALCOHOL: Nebo appears to have higher rates

ALCOHOL: Yes, Nebo has higher rates, but the rates aren't extremely high in any of the school districts. In fact, Provo and Alpine rates are close to Nebo rates.

ALCOHOL: 30 Day use appears to be increasing in Nebo 10th Graders and slight increase for 12th graders
PRESCRIPTION: Alpine appears to have higher narcotic use rates for 12th graders
Is the problem increasing, decreasing, or staying the same?
ALCOHOL: It depends on the school district. There is an increase in 30 day use in Alpine, decrease in Provo, and Nebo is staying same or decreasing.

ALCOHOL: 30 day use rate are relatively equal; however, Nebo School District has a slight increase in 30 day use.
PRESCRIPTION: All district are comparable in use rates - none appear significantly more than others.
Are there differences in patterns of consumption between age groups?
ALCOHOL: Yes, the 12 graders have higher use rates than lower grades. However bindge drinking rates among all grades are similar

ALCOHOL: Nebo appears to have slightly higher rates.
PRESCRIPTION NARCOTICS: Nebo's percentage is higher than Alpine and Provo.

ALCOHOL: Though Nebo is show as highest, the rates for Provo and Alpine are very close to Nebo and none are extremely high.
PRESCRIPTION: Though percentages are very low for the whole county--Provo district's 30 day use at 1.3% was less than half of Alpine's 3%, which was the highest.
3. What does the trend data for consumption suggest in the different geographical areas?
ALCOHOL: Nebo at the top of 30 day use gradually increasing through 10th grade until % drops in the 12th grade--putting Alpine at the top of the stats by 1%.
PRESCRIPTION: Nebo led through 8th & 10th grades, as all districts gradually increased use, but Nebo dropped slightly in 12th grade. Alpine leads stats in 12th grade.

ALCOHOL: 30 day use: Provo had a strong increase in use from 6th to 8th grade, almost doubled use again through 10th (to 7.3%), and showed a very slight decrease in 12th grade. Alpine showed a similar pattern until 12th grade when it climbed to 8.6%--taking over top spot. Nebo increased each year through 10th grade, topping out at 9% and then decreased in 12 grade.
Binge drinking: Provo's stats stayed about the same from 8-10th grades with 8th grade being the highest point. Alpine had only .2% use in 6th grade, increased to 3.5% by 8th, topped out in 10th, with a slight decrease in 12th grade.
Nebo gradually increased from 2.1% in 6th grade up to 4.9% in 12th.

4. Does the consumption in some geographic areas appear to be more of a problem than in others? Why?
ALCOHOL: rates for 30 day and binge drinking are fairly equal overall--but Nebo does have highest use until 12th grade.
PRESCRIPTION: Alpine and Nebo w/in 1% of each other, topping at 3%. Provo tops out at 1.3%. I do not know why Provo use begins 2 years later and is less,unless BYU,its accompanying faculty, staff, students, having a strict policy against drug use could have an effect on high school use. Would the educational and economic percentages be higher in Provo? I think the percentage of LDS and other religious families must be fairly similar in all the districts. Perhaps the Provo School District has an anti alcohol and drug program that is more effective? Are Provo students just smarter about life-style choices? Just Guessing!!
Are there differences in patterns of consumption between age groups, age and location?
With some small exceptions, use increases with age, starting about 6-8th grades.
ALCOHOL: 30 day use--All 3 districts within 2% of each other except for spike in Nebo 10th grade stats. Nebo & Provo stats went down slightly in 12th grade, while Alpine went slighty up replacing Nebo as highest. Binge drinking: Provo spiked in 8th grade, but otherwise had gradual increase from 6th-12th grade. Alpine had only .2% use in 6th grade, tripled use in 8th, went up in 10th and down 1% in 12th. Nebo started equal with Provo in 6th, up only slightly in 8th, increased in 10th and ended up on top at 4.9%by 12th grade.
PRESCRIPTION:Nebo was the only district that registered use in the 6th grade-.3%. Use steadily increased about 1% each through 8th and 10th-with very slight decrease in 12th (.2%). Alpine use followed closely behind Nebo in pattern and % from 8-12th grades.
Provo showed no use until 10th grade (only 1%). Use in 12th was only 1.3%--not quite half of Orem's use.
