Alcohol Sales from Liquor Stores and Packaging Agencies

  2. What does the trend data available for the consumption suggest in the different geographic areas? Is the problem increasing, decreasing, or staying the same? Discuss differences and patterns.

While this data does not provide specific consumption patterns among geographic areas, it does give information about how much opportunity there is for consumption through retail purchase. The density of off-premise alcohol outlets are highest among Goshen, Payson, Santaquin, Salem, Spanish Fork and Springville - all cities in the southern end of the county. Density is relatively equal throughout the rest of the cities in the county.
The density of on-premise alcohol outlets are highest among American Fork, Saratoga Springs, Provo, Payson and Orem, but all cities are generally similar in on-premise outlets.
There are only 6 state liquor stores/packing agencies in Utah County. There are 3 in the southern end of the county, 2 in the central area, and 1 in the northern end. This again may suggest that there is more opportunity to purchase alcohol in the southern end of the county, but Provo and Orem have the most dollars spent.


2. What does the trend data available for the consumption suggest in the different geographic areas? Is the problem increasing, decreasing, or staying the same? Discuss differences and patterns.

For the most part, density of off-premise outlets has stayed the same over the past 4 years. There have been some new convenience stores/grocery stores added, but nothing that would be significant.
The dollars spent at state liquor stores/packaging agencies have increased slightly from 2007-2008.
There have been two additional liquor stores announced - one in Springville, the other in Pleasant Grove.


3. Do the consumption in some geographic areas appear to be more of a problem than in others? Why?

In the areas where the density of alcohol outlets is higher, there is more opportunity for consumption, hence more opportunity for problems related to consumption. The southern end of the county has a higher density of alcohol outlets. This information is consistent with EASY compliance checks rates (the rate at which a youth under 21 can purchase alcohol from a store).


4. Are there differences in patterns of consumption between age groups?

Those under 21 should have a more difficult time purchasing alcohol because of ID checks, especially at the state liquor stores, but there is no specific data available.


5. Are there differences in patters of consumption between gender?

Workers from alcohol premises like restaurants must take anNCPLH course online as it covers Licensing Act of 2003, legal responsibilities of a licensed food premise in selling and supplying alcohol, and why the personal licenses and premises licenses are needed. This is also designed to prevent underage alcohol access of minors.
